The card holder consists of a back piece with a hanger, and two pockets which are attached to the back piece. The pockets are staggered one on top of the other. It is assumed that the reader knows the basics of sewing. The usual sewing items are needed to make this project: Sewing machine, matching thread, iron, scissors, measuring tape or ruler, pins, etc. Also needed is a Pressing Pad to protect piece when using iron-on adhesive tape, especially when ironing the cross stitched decoration. NOTE: ˝" SEAMS ARE USED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT! ALSO, PLEASE FOLLOW MANUFACTURE’S INSTRUCTIONS WHEN USING IRON-ON ADHESIVE.
To Make the Back: Materials: (2) Pieces of light brown cloth, 8" x 10" (4) Pieces of Dark Red cloth, 8" x 2" (1) Piece of Dark Red cloth, 3" x 18" (2) Pieces Ultra Firm Stablizer ( 6 1/2'" x 10 3/4") "Pellon Peltex 70" stabilizer was used in the example. Iron-On Adhesive Tape, Super Weight "HeatnBond" Hem, Super Strength was used in the example. Directions: To Make Hanger: 1) Fold each 18" side under ˝", iron to crease. 2) Fold in half lengthwise, matching long edges. Following manufacture’s instructions, seal edges using iron-on adhesive To make each of the two Back pieces: 1) Matching 8" sides, sew a 2" x 8" piece to each end of 8" x 10" piece. 2) Iron seam flat. Pin Hanger to the front of one piece, ˝" from sides as shown.
Place the two back pieces together, right sides facing. Sew around the two long sides and top, carefully including the ends of the hanger. Trim corners, turn, and press flat. Turn under raw bottom edges ˝" and press to crease. Insert the two interfacing pieces. Seal the bottom seam with iron-on adhesive. Press entire back and set aside.
To Make the Pockets: Materials: For pocket #1: (1) Dark Brown cloth, 7" x 10". (1) Printed Dark Green cloth, 2" x 7" (1) Piece Ultra Firm Stablizer ( 5 1/2'" x 5 1/2"") "Pellon Peltex 70" stabilizer was used in the example (1) Cross Stitched Design, stitched, trim edges to approximately 3/4", carefully fold and press edges under around design using Pressing Cloth For pocket #2: (1) Dark Brown cloth, 7" x 10". (1) Printed Medium Purple cloth, 2" x 7" (1) Piece Ultra Firm Stablizer ( 5 1/2'" x 5 1/2"") "Pellon Peltex 70" stabilizer was used in the example
Directions for each Pocket: 1) Sew the 2" x 7" piece to the 7" x 10" piece along a 7" end. Iron seam flat. 2) Place piece right side up with 2" strip on top. Bring lower brown edge up and match raw edges. Sew edges together. The piece will now resemble a "sleeve".
3) With wrong sides still facing, iron piece flat with strip at top. Sew along one side. Trim corners, turn right side out, and press. 4) Turn under raw side edges ˝" and press to crease. Insert interfacing piece. Seal the open seam with iron-on adhesive. Press piece flat Place prepared cross stitched design on the green and brown pocket, centering it horizontally. Attach design to pocket using iron-on adhesive and pressing cloth. (Or hand stitch around edges if desired.) Keep iron on piece long enough for heat to go through all the necessary layers of cloth and stitches. Watch this process carefully! Let cool. Arrange the two pockets on back piece as shown in photo. Carefully remove the pocket with the cross stitched design. Attach the remaining pocket to back with iron-on adhesive (1/4" wide strip) or hand sewing. Replace the design pocket and attach in a similar manner. Let cool and enjoy
